QUEER SAFE SPACES

Posted on June 17, 2023August 31, 2025 By Elizabeth Namoloh

QUEER SAFE SPACES

There’s something beautiful about how, in spite of the government’s vitriol and overt disregard for the rights of LGBTQ+ Namibians, there are certain individuals and organisations in the country who refuse to play by the government’s rules and have carved out safe spaces for queer people to seek refuge. These safe spaces are oases in the desert of oppression, providing a sanctuary where LGBTQ+ individuals can let their hair down, be themselves, and find a sense of community and belonging. Here’s a list of places in Windhoek that are filled with love, warmth and acceptance.

1. Vinyls

A quaint, snug café located in Zoo Park. I don’t know what melts the heart more, the beautiful music that sets the ambience, the rustic, artsy décor that gives it a nice homely feel or the smiles and laughter that fill the room. Vinyls café is a joyous place, one that opens it’s doors to everyone and has become a home away from home for many queer Namibian folk.

2. The FNCC/ Café Prestige

Notorious for hosting events that provide a platform for queer Nambian artists to showcase their  art and what their capable of. It serves as a place where the community can assemble and experience a sense of acceptance and belonging. The artists who perform here are able to express themselves without concern for criticism or discrimination and They are able to confront prejudices and dismantle barriers through their art, paving the way for a society that is more accepting and inclusive.

3. Drag Night Namibia

Drag Night Namibia is really an experience like no other, it’s an immaculate concoction of love and spectacle that galvanises the gregarious soul. A truly one of a kind event, the house of Dash introduces us to ballroom culture. The pulsating music, roaring crowd, incredible fashion and showstopping performances make it the perfect place for Namibian queer folk to let loose and build a sense of kin with other members of the community. Catch them on the 30th June and 1st of July, and bask in the queer glamour and glory of their next shows entitled “It’s Personal”.

4. Pride Pop Up

The expo and live music exhibit is a great place forcultural enthusiasts. If you would like to enjoy good food, drinks, music and get a chance to really get acquainted with members of the LGBTQ+ community this is the perfect event for you. Set to take place on the 24th of June under the theme, “Strength in Solidarity” we are super excited for this fun filled celebration of queer Namibian lives!

5. Brewer’s Market

Known for being the home of Namibia’s first LGBTQ+ Landmark ‘The Rainbow Sidewalk’ , this is a great place to wind down, let loose and dance the night away. It’s dark and elusive atmosphere, coupled with the booming music sets the tone for a night of letting go of your inhibitions.

Namibian Beauty Is Not One Look
