THE AGE OF ANDROGYNOUS FASHION TRENDS

Its our second issue here at Kultoure and boy, do we have something to say…

Goodbye gender specific stereotypes, the lines have been blurred. We wear what we want and how we want to.

Stick around and let’s appropriate this together.

I am here to acknowledge some of the fashion trends that dominate our wardrobe currently.

Women have been wearing clothing from the mens section for decades. meanwhile men had always been limited to their section because, society had conditioned us to question androgynous fashion choices. However, things are changing; both fashion designers and retail manufacturers are making clothing pieces that are not segregated by gender conformities, and not just clothing. Fashion aesthetics now accommodate both men and women. WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE! This kind of growth is something to be proud of. We have become so used to seeing all these trends that we aren’t even aware of the progress we (as society) have made.

Let me explain:

1. THE STATEMENT PUFFER JACKET

Now, I totally understand that your number one priority at the moment is putting away your warm clothing because, seasons have changed and its not oh-so-chilly outside anymore. However, don’t put away your puffer jacket just yet, we still have two month of decent weather left, before December’s unforgiving heat. You could still get away (fashionably, that is) with a puffer jacket.

2. THE CHUNKY BOOT

Again the December heat is two months away. Go ahead and unpack the chunky boot because it pairs perfectly with anything, there’s no denying their functionality. Their larger soles make them comfortable enough to take on all terrains, and the best part is that; they hold no gender domain.

3. YEEZY SLIDE RESIN

No unpacking needed for this one, its all season approved. From the very beginning the YEEZY Resin Slide was never restricted to one gender. When asked whether men could wear then too, a representative at Adidas responded by saying, “Yes, the YEEZY supply is in sizes for adults, kids and infants. No restrictions, anyone can wear them.” But, we all knew that already. I have realized that Kanye is constantly taking us somewhere new, how dare we not perceive it?!

4. POWER SUITS

The sartorial world is okay with this, I promise. The suit design has changed just a little since 2018, it is no longer just for the corporate environment. Designers have altered it to be more casual yet elegant and at the same time, you can literally wear it anywhere. It has been on trend for a few years now and still going strong, the Power Suit can be worn with all types of accessories, shoes and undershirt. When you need a confidence booster, turn to the Power Suit.

5. TONAL DRESSING

There is something alluring in committing to a single shade of color. Tonal dressing is one of the top trends for both men and women. The power in singularly executing a solid-colored and unpatterned outfit. Wouldn’t it be devastating to live a period where shades were assigned to certain genders? The buffoonery! I still haven’t come across someone who does tonal dressing like Wellem Kapenda.

6. THE FLANNEL SHIRT

To wear at home or out and about, with its distinct aesthetic and comfortable material the flannel shirt became a star player for outfits in 2020 & 2021. Since the beginning, the flannel was not content to wane at the dusk of catering to one gender; both men and women wore flannel t-shirt.

7. THE ESSENTIAL WHITE SNEAKER

Fashion critics have requested for the white sneaker to make its exit since 2017, I mean there is an overwhelming number of trendy riffs that have commandeered the spotlight. Trends aside the plain white sneaker continues to earn it’s importance in our wardrobes, we as consumers have the plain white sneaker in a vast assortment of options, from price point to quality, to material — therefore may we keep the white sneaker as an essential and on the top of our trends list.

8. UTILITY WEAR

The plethora of pieces that once exuded high-octane masculine fashion: UTILITY WEAR has been doing the rounds for several seasons now. The beloved safari inspired trend has been delivered to us in a more fashionable touch without forfeiting its golden purpose: functionality.

The fashion world is moving forward, let us move along with it. And dont forget that fashion is a reflection of who you are and where you are in your life journey, may you never conform to the restrictions- may you never fail to express yourselves. Please share your amazing fashion experience; who knows, you might just be featured in our next issue.
