READING IS TO THE MIND, WHAT EXERCISE IS TO THE BODY

Posted on August 21, 2021August 31, 2025 By Elizabeth Namoloh

Time being an innate to the natural world, doomed to pass sooner or later, centuries lapsing bringing forth new generations but, some things remain unchanged. Reading has been an adapted concept for so many years and of course it goes without saying that it mirrors the philosophy of the most interesting minds in history. Authors of all times explored different themes, which brought about many genres namely historical fiction, fantasy, drama, crime fiction, thriller, motivational, and of course the most loved of all, romance.

Books are the main source of knowledge, bringing existing knowledge from different people, their life experiences, hard learned lessons and so forth, have to bear on what they have learned from the text and incorporate it into a person’s daily life, for everything in this life is tied to a string of knowledge explaining that concept. For there is a saying that says ‘’the best way to hide something from black people is to put it in a book’’.

Books have the power to transport us to different worlds, thus the saying ‘’books let you travel without moving your feet’’. Reading takes you places, it is like entering a new world(s), a world of imagination. It brings comfort, for some, even just at a mere sight of a book, all of their worries immediately vanishes into thin air.

Reading a book, a magazine or a newspaper is not only supposed to be about pleasure and enjoyment, because there’s more to reading than that. Research has shown that reading (regularly) is associated with health benefits such as reducing stress, fighting depression, lowering blood pressure, heart rate, and the list goes on. Additionally, reading gives one the opportunity to learn new words, thus improving vocabulary. Therefore if you want to improve your vocabulary, reading is the way to go, but remember : regularly. It also strengthens the brain, thus it is recommended for small children to start reading from a young age since this may help boost their performance at school, improve their vocab, build good communication skills and their self esteem.

All in all, reading is the best way to take care of your body and brain, from reducing stress to improving vocabulary and fighting depression. In a book we find both company, a friend and a teacher, and we might as well just call it some type of medicine because of their healing abilities, because as Charles Eliot said, “ Books are the quietest and most constant of friends ; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most of teachers.

Books are good company, in sad times and happy times, for books are people – who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book”. B. White
